Comment on Reader Case Study: Screenwriter + Software Engineer + Baby in Munich, Germany by Melody https://frugalwoods.com/2022/01/26/reader-case-study-screenwriter-software-engineer-baby-in-munich-germany/#comment-572843 Thu, 24 Oct 2024 07:48:32 +0000 https://frugalwoods.com/?p=32233#comment-572843 Hi Jane, very late reply here but I just thought I’d chime in on finding friends with children the age of yours. I arrived in Munich with no German language, no friends and a 10 week old baby (plus a German husband so don’t worry I wasn’t totally alone). Yeah, it was tough! I lucked on an English speaking baby class run by the wonderful Lynn and met at group of 10 English speaking Mama’s with babies almost exactly the same age as mine. Nine years later we are still friends and meet up regularly. Here is the link (still worth it if you have later babies even if you know the baby stuff): https://www.pippagina.com. P.S. your rent is really good value!

Comment on Reader Case Study: Facing A Potential Lay-Off At Age 68 by Sandy Shroyer https://frugalwoods.com/2020/10/21/reader-case-study-facing-a-potential-lay-off-at-age-68/#comment-571100 Mon, 30 Sep 2024 06:21:55 +0000 https://frugalwoods.com/?p=29723#comment-571100 Hi again, this is Lily and I thought I’d update our status. We traveled the U.S. during Covid while I was working (I didn’t get laid off!), spending one month at a time in an Airbnb in each place. I retired just two month shy of my 70th birthday (I’m now 72), and the next day we moved to France. We travel around Europe, visiting the U.S. twice per year. We live mostly on our Social Security, participate in the French national healthcare system, and last year we bought an apartment and an electric car (paid cash for both), which enables us to make road trips. No debt, no financial worries, just tons of gratitue–and we’re living our dream! I hope all the wonderful commenters on this thread are doing well.

Comment on How I’m Learning To Love My Body, Find A Middle Ground, And Buy Clothes Without Regret by Aly https://frugalwoods.com/2019/09/05/how-im-learning-to-love-my-body-find-a-middle-ground-and-buy-clothes-without-regret/#comment-570304 Fri, 20 Sep 2024 18:33:40 +0000 http://frugalwoods.com/?p=23262#comment-570304 Five years late to the party, but after reading through the comments, it’s REMARKABLE that women of ALL AGES have been so deeply damaged by societal expectations placed on them. Men obviously don’t escape this, but we all know that the pressures behind physical appearance weighs the heaviest on women. Disordered eating and out of whack exercise habits have plagued GENERATIONS of women and I’m so, SO happy to see that things seem like they’re turning a corner. I’m hopeful that future girls don’t have to be subjected to the mental garbage of being a size 2 or you’re somehow unworthy in society, rock hard abs or you’re unworthy, etc. That said, I know I personally grapple with SHOULDing myself in the other direction too. I SHOULD accept myself, I SHOULD love how I look always. The guilt mentality can grip tight for any sort of path. I think the idea of moderation is such a healthy thing to work on and strive towards. And knowing that even moderation will always be fluctuating. Maybe it’s just learning and accepting that everything is always changing. Adaptability seems to be key.

I also wanted to point out that, as someone who is working on a forever “all or nothing” mentality, I have learned through therapy that I have OCD tendencies. A lot of my obsessions, ruminations, and lack of accepting less than perfectly controlled situations, stem from these tendencies. I was blown away when I learned about just how fitting this news was for my life and my mind. Knowing this, it’s made it easier for me to adjust going forward. Just food for thought, as I find so much of your mental health content relatable. Hope all is well with your wonderful family and look forward to future posts if you so choose!

I personally love that it’s a Lands End coat, and she said LL Bean. It shows just how little she cares about brands, and I find that admirable.
