When Type A Becomes Type B (aka Oh Shit, I Totally Forgot)

budget, credit cards, paying bills, Uncategorized / Friday, May 17th, 2013

Have you ever had one of those weeks (or couple of weeks) where you, a normally responsible worry-wort who never forgets when a bill is due, totally becomes a space cadet and forgets to pay not only your rent but your cable bill and your credit card bill?

*raising my hand*

Yup. That’s how my life has been the past few weeks. I have no idea what happened to me. I am usually on top of bills and sit down on the 30th or the 1st of the month to set up the coming month’s budget, pay all bills which have already come, mail the rent check, and pay any online bills. Then I update my spreadsheets (yes, I have multiple) to update my debt tracker and my graph (uh yes, I also have a graph) which shows how much debt I have and what I have paid thus far.

I am a totally type A personality and I love pictures hung at right angles, papers in neat piles and also at right angles, pennies carefully tracked, and bills paid on time. Yes, I can deal with mess (just ask my husband about dishes in the sink) but I usually am responsible and keep track of paperwork and due dates. I love writing lists and I have dozens of yellow sticky notes with notes to myself and lists of things I need to do.

And then….I guess your brain can reach maximum capacity. Perhaps it is due to being in a new place and having my routines changed. Perhaps I have been lulled into a false sense of security by ignoring my bills. Perhaps it’s because I switched my birth control. Lord knows why. But I am certainly going to make myself some reminders in my phone so I don’t forget things again next month!

Have you ever forgotten to pay your bills? What is your organizational method for staying on top of your fiscal responsibilities?
