Decluttering can be an intimidating task, especially if you have a lot of items to sort through. And when you have a family, whoooaaaa nelly! It can be hard to know where to begin, and it can be difficult to stay motivated during the process. Want to learn how to make the process much better for you – and anyone else involved? Here are a few tricks and tips to make decluttering easier:

Set a decluttering goal

First and foremost, it’s important to set a goal. As with anything, goal setting is the best way to set the stage and then make everything happen. Decluttering specifically is a process, and it’s important to have a plan before you start. Set a timeline for yourself, and make sure to stick to it. It can also be helpful to break down the task into smaller, more manageable steps. For example, you could focus on one room at a time, or one category of items at a time.

Get organized and then stay organized

Next up: again, with anything, it’s important to stay organized. Everyone has a different way to organize, but there are a few things that everyone should do when decluttering.  As you declutter, make sure to label and organize the items that you keep, so you know where to find them later on. This will help you stay on track and avoid having to search for items in the future!

Create your systems and processes

It’s super important to have a system and process for sorting items. As you go through your items, sort them into three categories: keep, donate, and discard. This will help you make quick decisions, and it will also make it easier to determine which items you want to keep and which ones you want to get rid of. I’m all for finding ease whenever possible, and this is a sure way to make your life much easier!

Be realistic with your goals

Even if you jump in head first, it’s always very important to be realistic. Don’t try to declutter everything at once – it’s a process, and it can take time. Instead, focus on one task at a time and make sure to set achievable goals. Finally, it’s important to stay motivated. Decluttering can be an overwhelming task, so it’s important to remember why you’re doing it. Remind yourself of the benefits of a clutter-free home, and reward yourself for completing each task. Sometimes, setting up smaller goals (ahead of your big goal) is a great way to calmly work your way through, finally achieving that big goal of yours!

Utilize helpful hands, whenever possible

Last but not least, utilize helping hands, whenever possible. Loop in family members and anyone else who might be able to help you. This is especially helpful if you have a ton of decluttering to do. You can utilize free help, if you can, but if you do have friends and family members help you, you can always buy them pizza, coffee, lunch, or whatever else you think would be a good treat and a small way to say “thank you” for the help!

If the project is too big for free help, you can always consider hiring a moving company to tackle the tasks for you, so that you don’t have to lift a finger. Moving companies can help you with not only large tasks (like couches, TVs, washers and dryers, etc.), but they can also tackle the smaller items for you, as well. In Louisiana, Heaven on Earth Moving Services is a company that does local moving in Lake Charles, Baton Rouge, and beyond. They have good reviews and can tackle large and small moves and items.

By following these tips and tricks, you can make decluttering easier and more manageable. Remember to set achievable goals, stay organized, and stay motivated throughout the process.Seek out help when you need it. With a little bit of planning and effort, you can declutter your home in no time.
